Pipe World

Today, I made some minor enhancements to my Pipe World fan game. I started this game in 2005 and so far it has 8 levels, a bonus room (which you get access to after defeating a boss). I have no plans at the moment to add any extra levels, but if I did, I would like them to have a city theme. I would also like one day to improve the look of the player as he looks a bit amateurish right now. The story of the game is:

"We are losing the war and we cannot tolerate any more losses. As our best and only remaining soldier, it is now up to you alone to conquer our enemy. Unfortunately due to our limited resources, we cannot provide a better weapon than what you have now. However, we are working on upgrades, which we will transfer to you during your mission. The mission is a challenging one, but we are confident that with your proven excellent abilities, you will have no problem undertaking it."
Levels
1-1 Green Peaks 1: The first level is fairly straightforward as there are few enemies and obstacles. There are some secrets located near the bottom of the level, but be careful not to fall past the edge.
1-2 Green Peaks 2: Themed the same as the first level but at a later time of day. This level contains a pipe maze and introduces a new enemy - the strange turret.
1-3 Sewers: This level is located underground and a also a bit of a maze. There are hidden bonus rooms and access to the secret level is from here. The boss is a large robot that shoots rockets at you.
2-1 Lava Land 1: If you can make it this far, you will meet your commanding officer who will brief you on the mission ahead. He will also give you the password for this level. Don't fall in the lava as you will not be able to escape. With the lava tolerator device, you can walk through lava as though it isn't there, but you will still rapidly lose energy. There are hidden bonuses within the lava.
2-2 Lava Land 2: Finding your way into the fortress is your first challenge - the clue is that it involves going down into an uncomfortable area. Watch out for the rising lava in one part of this level and good luck with the pipe maze...
2-3 Lava Land Fortress: This fortress is heavily fortified and contains a new robot with an machine gun - try to avoid these. The boss cannot be destroyed by shooting it alone - you will have to find another way. Even the bonus rooms are guarded by deadly forces. The bonus level can be accessed from this level, and it is definitely one you will not want to miss.

Inspiration
The following games were my inspiration, with the biggest influence being Super Mario Bros. 3:
  • Quake II
  • Mario (various)
  • Sonic (various)
  • Star Wing (Starfox)
  • Super Metroid
  • Bubsy
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Doom (Aliens-TC)
Videos
Over two years ago, I made some poor quality videos of this game for the title screen, level 1-1, level 1-2 and level 1-3, which you can see below (hopefully one day I will remake them):

Here is much higher quality one I made today showing levels 2-1, 2-2 and 2-3:

Fan Again

The red line shows the temp rising and falling as I have periodically turn the cooler on and off to keep the temp stable - which is obviously annoying. The CPU temperature rised when SETI@home kicked in after 5 minutes of inactivity.

Flug GB

This much anticipated game is being developed by forum member E-Man and would sit alongside easily with other games from the era of the Game Boy. A video uploaded in Feb 2009 of the demo can be seen here and I think you will agree looks like a lot of fun to play (and a lot of work to create):

The game is being discussed in the following Forum topic - Flug GB.

More from YouTube

While I'm posting YouTube videos, I thought it would be nice to share a few that are on my favourites list:

Strange, it looks like a lot of my favourite videos have been removed...

More Fan News

I forgot to mention yesterday that another problem with the fan is that even when it is possible to reach a stable temperature, the fan speed very gradually decreases to a point, leading to very gradual temperature increase meaning that it eventually reaches the dreaded 57C or 62C. I really hope that if I choose to by a Dell gaming laptop again, that they will address this very annoying aspect of it.

Disqus

I have used Disqus for a while now on various pages of this site. However I'm having a bit of a problem with this blog - with this page, with the June 2010 and August 2012 pages. If you look you will see that all three pages have exactly the same threads even though the URL and Identifier variables are set differently. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who can tell me why this is.

New Job

Finally for today, I can reveal that I will be starting a new job next week, which I'm looking forward to. It involves fixing computers in a corporate environment. I'll let you know how it goes.

Dell XPS M1730 Video Card Fan

I have had this laptop since 2009. Days before the one year warranty ran out, the motherboard or graphics card failed. Eventually after parts were replaced, it is now working again. However, ever since then, I have been irritated by the annoying video/graphics card fan (even while I write this, it is happening). Everything is fine until the temperature of one of the GPUs gets to 57C, which happens when just in Windows. As soon as it reaches this temperature, the fan's speed (and therefore noise) increases until it goes down to 56C when the fan slows down. Shortly after the temperature goes up to 57C and the fan speed increases again.

If you ask me, this is a terrible way of doing things as every few seconds the fan speeds up and slows down. If I turn off my laptop cooler, the same problem happens, except when the temperature reaches 62C, it speeds up and then goes down to 61C.

A much better solution would be to allow the user to control the fan speed, which isn't possible as far as I know on Dell machines. I expect the problem relates to the replacement video card, which may not have enough thermal paste. Although I've heard these machines suffer from overheating.

Irritating Fan: the red line shows the GPU temperature changing from 56C to 57C, increasing and decreasing the fan speed each time
