iOS 7 Update

My wife updated to iOS 7 and the phone seems to work perfectly well, except of course for Find My iPhone.  It would be good to get some clarification as to what the purpose of this is exactly.  Is it supposed to be for one person who has multiple iOS devices or is it aimed at multiple people with one device?  If it is the latter, then I would like to get some clarification as to how exactly I am supposed to use it.

Perhaps that is what Find Friends is for...

iOS 7

Today I updated to iOS 7 on my iPhone 5.  For the most part, I am impressed by the way it looks and all the functionality that I had been used to from iOS 6 is still there ... apart from one major thing.  Why is it that Apple have decided to prevent extra iCloud accounts from using Find My iPhone?  I had previously set up an account specifically for this purpose for my wife and I to use.  As she has not yet updated, I am still able to see her (although I have to enter the iCloud account password every time I open the app), but I no longer appear.  Since she uses an iPhone 4, I'm not sure whether she should update anyway, just in case her phone runs too slowly as a result.  Hopefully Apple will see the error of their ways here; I know for a fact that I won't be the only one affected by this.  I would be interested to know what the rationale is behind it - but we will probably never know.

One thing that will be very useful about iOS 7 is the Control Centre.  This can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.  It allows quick access to the following features:

  • Airplane Mode
  • Wi-Fi (on/off)
  • Bluetooth (on/off)
  • Do Not Disturb
  • Portrait Orientation lock
  • Brightness adjustment
  • Music playing control
  • AirDrop
  • Torch (good that I no longer need a separate flashlight app)
  • Clock app
  • Calculator app
  • Camera app

Interesting that they use the British spelling 'Centre' here, yet they provide an app named 'Game Center'...

The visual aspect of the OS has had a major overhaul - it seems that next to nothing has been kept from iOS 6.  Certain elements have been given a flatter look, such as app icons and text/iMessage bubbles. Some parts have had a much more noticable change - I might even go as far as to use the word 'beautiful'.  The Weather app for example now has an animated background so that clouds move accross the sky and you can watch the rain and snow fall.

FaceTime can now make voice only calls - very useful if you want to call another iOS user for free without having to worry about the way you look!  Not sure how this works when calling an iOS 6 user though.

Some users will appreciate the extra ringtones and alert sounds - you are also given the opportunity to buy extra ones from the Apple Store.  App authors have already started changing the look of their apps to match iOS 7 - the eBay app is an example.

Another feature is automatic app updating.  However, personally I would prefer to read the notes that an author has provided with the update so I know exactly what has changed and so I can make a decision about whether I want to update or not.

Overall I would recommend getting the update if you have an iPhone 4S or 5.  However if using Find My iPhone with another iCloud account is important to you, then you may want to delay updating for now.  I've seen a few people say that they've noticed that the battery has gone down quicker today than it usually would since the update.  I know that today I've been using the phone more, mainly out of curiosity to discover more about the new OS and wonder whether this is the cause.  Only time will tell on that one.
