Placeme

For about three months now, I have been using this app on my iPhone - Placeme by Alohar Mobile Inc.  It works by automatically recording the place you are currently at by using a combination of your Wifi location (if available) and your GPS location.  You need to register a Placeme account before the app will work.

The Timeline View shows all the places you've visited on a given day.  Against each place is the place's name, location and the length of time you've been there.  Occasionally the name of the place will be incorrect because the app has mistaken your location for one nearby rather than where you actually are.  However for the most part, it is very accurate - even when you do not have a Wifi connection.  You can add places manually too if necessary.

There is also the Map View which as the name suggests, shows a map with pins showing where you've been on the currently viewed day.  Also, the My Places view gives an overview of all the places you've visited since you installed the app (assuming you have enabled it to record this data) allowing you to sort the list in various ways - by number of visits, for example.  You will need an Internet connection to use Placeme as all places are stored remotely on Alohar's servers.

I have found the app useful for recording place names while I've been on holiday.  When I edit my video footage, I'll be able to add captions showing the names of places by looking back at the list of where I have been.

I would like to see the app updated to work with the iPhone 5's larger screen and it would be nice to see a map showing all the places I've been to in the past or if that's not possible then perhaps the last 100 places.  The HeatMap does do something similar to this by indicating areas you visit frequently.

On the whole, Placeme is a valuable addition to any iOS device - particularly as it's free of charge.
