Help files on Vista

Postby Keith » Sat Oct 17, 2009 2:03 pm

Now this isn't really a VB tip its just that I've read on other VB forums that you can't access the older *.hlp files on Vista. Now a friend of mine has Vista so I emailed an help file that I had made to see if it would open and he hasn't got back to me.

I was searching the web the other day and I came across a site that does the older VB3 apps and the coments in there were becasue it uses the *.hlp file Vista won't open them and they gave a link to sort out the problem.

Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista

This is because M$ in their wisdom don't install Winhlp32.exe on Vista.

Now I know you can access any part of an help file using the WinHelp API because that uses user32.dll which I think should be on all Windows systems but I will stand to be corrected if I'm wrong. ;)
I've been programming with VB for 17 years. Started with VB4 16bit Pro, VB5 Pro, VB6 Pro/Enterprise and now VB3 Pro. But I'm no expert, I'm still learning.
